They take it in their stride because they believe that they are unique. They believe being stoic is one of the factors that makes them exceptional. It is why they still emotionally invest so much of their identity in the Second World War. They believe they have nothing to learn from others because they are superior. The ideology of British intellectual superiority permeates both the Left and Right of the political spectrum. So why do you believe the Labour Party adopted the slogan make Brexit work? Their leader has embraced the soundbite 'make Brexit work' because it emanates from listening to the people; their constituents want Brexit to work. The problem he faces is for Brexit to work, he either has to adopt Liz Truss's policies or the Europeans, out of the goodness of their hearts, have to give them the privileges of being the single market (have their cake and eat it). Why do they believe they are entitled to special treatment? It is because they won the war; this exceptionalism feeds into their xenophobia. When I was on the campaign trail, many in the Labour heartlands complained that the Germans had destroyed their steel and car industries and their ability to innovate. The constituents' belief that the Europeans are responsible for the decline of their material well-being is convenient for the Labour and Conservative parties because it excuses them of their role in destroying those industries. It was not the Europeans who nationalised and under-invested in those industries. It was not the Europeans who privatised and undersold those said industries and offered them subsidies. So instead of 'Make Brexit Work', they should adopt the slogan, 'The World Owes Us A Living.'
