It is not only in America that some believe that we should be grateful for slavery. For example, the British government recently commissioned a study on institutional racism. One of its conclusions was that blacks should be thankful for slavery because it enabled us to become civilised.

“There is a new story about the Caribbean experience which speaks to the slave period not only being about profit and suffering but how culturally African people transformed themselves into a re-modeled African/Britain,” the report read.
