When protest is a monetary asset
for the things that matter, you stayed quiet
It was all a matter of calculating the risks,
of knowing your audience and targeting the finished product.

Injustices and persecution, you believe, can be compartmentalised.
Justice is a matter of risk assessments
your words are carefully crafted
It all sounds like a faux outrage
self-sacrifice does not require courage.

And so you create the accompanying merchandise
the dance routines and live performances
your legions fawned in adoration
the message you preach resonates with them.

You appropriate and steal, but that does not matter
You spoke about the music having no soul
but your heart, you bought and sold
You are stone cold; you dare mention the name of Nina Simone.

You can pass,
you have the assets to fit both sides of the divide,
Ah, they fawn, you are so creative,
you capture the zeitgeist of the age
you are performing on stage,
everything is a parody in this performative age.
