Cultivating and Brutalising Black Bodies

I try to respect all human beings. I will not go out of my way to be abusive towards another person. Respect is something humans earn. I treat all foremost as human beings. I wrote a piece recently about my personal experiences, interacting with a few black women in positions of power; I tried my best not to generalise and universalise these experiences. I have felt that these women have judged me on criteria that would not apply to a white man. We have, or should I say, I have a propensity to focus on negative experiences and forget the overwhelmingly positive ones. (Thank you, David Saint Vincent, for reinforcing this message) However, that does mean one should not reflect on the few negative experiences. Both men and women, black and white, do good and bad things. Equality, in my opinion, should see all as human and, with this, all the associated traits and behaviours.

I also believe that some elements of white patriarchy (I used the term white patriarchy to refer to the predominant power structure in societies) find it more acceptable to have black women representing ‘black bodies, particularly in spaces where individuals predominantly interact with white audiences.
