My reaction, and perhaps yours, resists literal explanation, aligning with how Wittgenstein wrote “what can be shown cannot be said” (1922, 4.1212). While Wittgenstein never commented directly on Rothko, his distinction between showing and saying aligns with Rothko’s ability to reveal emotions beyond the reach of language.
