To show the masses that they understood, and spoke their voice, they shed their finery and wore their rage!!!?. This symbolic act obtained more poignance because it went against the norm. The masses were accustomed to aspiring to and wearing the cloth of the cultural elite. A ritual performed to convey their allegiance and aspirations.
The anointed leader, the Etonian Messiah, the bearer of the burden of the masses, appeared on the video-gram. An orchestrated act to show them that the transformation was complete, that even he was not immune from the virus. The symbolic message conveyed by this event, was that he understood their pain; for, as they annunciated and seized upon, the virus does not discriminate, and though this message of shared suffering the bond was cemented: the perception that he is a man of the people. And, to his good fortune, his affliction was prolonged, thus affirming this belief; this, added to his most desired and valued cultural psychological disposition, the ruthless pursuit of the vestibule of power, enhanced his status in their eyes. In this age, it was a quality that was much admired: grit and determination to obtain social prestige at any cost. With 900 plus dead in a day, only one life was deemed indispensable.
The epidemic became a great metaphor of these times. The political and popular media elite sought to convey it as a great leveller, never mind that they had privilege access to physicians. An entitlement that was not available to the masses. As leaders, they had deemed themselves of superior status and through this had anointed themselves with expedient access to testing, something that was not even available to the physicians who cared for the sick. Alas, catching the virus imbued them the added advantage of immunity, this mirroring the discourse they initially sought to pursue, a doctrine prized from the philosophy of Social Darwinism.
The bastions of the voices of the people imbued consciousness to the virus by classifying it as an enemy. The nation-states were therefore at war with an invisible entity, something dreamt of only in the realms of science fiction.
War, as has been since the beginning of time, was being used as an instrument for social cohesion. War unites the people and nations against a common cause/enemy. In this greatest of battles, it was the whole of humanity fighting against a common adversary, the alien invader, alas, not one from out of space but one born of this earth.
In these times, who would dare raise a dissenting voice, or question the actions of the rulers? Who would be crazy enough not to want to see humanity prevail against this foe? Who would dare question. the strategies expounded by the political and cultural elites?
And thus, voices of dissent and critical analysis were all but silenced, even in this age of mass communication. Alas, those who had created those great machines that they had sold as the bastions of free speech censored the critical voices. Those who dare speak out were labelled traitors and devoid of sanity. And so, after we enter this uncritical age, fascism shall prevail.
The elite controlled the mind machines. These same machines were utilized to significant effect before the epidemic, this being the veil of patriotism used by the elite to unite the masses.
The figurehead, the conscience of the nation, was prized out to promote moral courage and fortitude, and to reinforce the message that this most sacred of cultural creation, hereditary privilege, would be maintained, no virus will alter their way of life. And so, they wrapped and comforted themselves in their flags, just as they bury their heroes, for they aspire to take their divisions to the dominion of heaven. The irony that eluded them was this was a folly. If anything, the virus highlighted the futility of man’s symbolic imposition of his will over nature.
To mask their incompetence, unpreparedness and failures, the political and cultural elite, formulated a strategy of hiding behind the mask of science. Herd immunity, a scientific theory was seized upon: blind allusions. The mantra they used was that they were only following the advice of the scientists. Science as is well known has no moral conscience, it being beyond the realms of human morality? Alas, the mathematicians highlighted the human cost of this action. These were the same people who had previously indoctrinated the populous with the propaganda that they should not trust experts. They who preached that the common-sense of the people had more validity than the voices of the scientists. In this new utopian world, all knowledge was valid and of equal status. Now, amid this Post-Modern tragedy, they sought to disprove entropy.
